It may not be the most riveting read, but it’s certainly the most important. Every candle should be enjoyed with care. How to care for your candle, from first light to final burn.
There’s something deeply comforting about lighting a candle – the soft flicker, the quiet glow, the way fragrance gently fills a space.
To help you enjoy your candle fully (and safely), a little care goes a long way. These simple guidelines will ensure a clean, even burn and a longer-lasting scent.
The First Burn Matters
Set time aside for your first burn. This initial light sets the tone for every burn that follows.
On the first burn, allow the wax to melt as close to the edges of the vessel as possible. This helps set the foundation for an even burn over time.
There’s no need for perfection – a near full melt pool is enough.
Give it time, usually around 3–4 hours.
Rushing this first burn can lead to tunnelling, where wax is left behind along the sides.
Keep Your Wick Trimmed
Before each burn, trim the wick to approximately 5mm.
This small step encourages an even burn, reduces soot, and keeps the flame at a calm, steady height.
Burn with Care
For the best experience, avoid burning your candle for more than 4 hours at a time.
Extended burning can cause the vessel to overheat and the flame to grow too large. Allowing your candle to rest between burns helps preserve both the fragrance and the integrity of the jar.
Place Your Candle Thoughtfully
Always place your candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, open windows, or anything that could catch fire – such as curtains.
A still, sheltered spot allows the flame to burn cleanly and evenly.
As always, keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
Never Leave a Flame Unattended
A burning candle should always remain within sight.
Even in the calmest of spaces, an open flame deserves care and attention.
Keep the Wax Clean
Ensure the wax pool remains free from debris, such as matches or wick trimmings. These can interfere with the burn and may pose a safety risk.
Know When to Stop
As your candle nears its end, discontinue use when approximately 1cm of wax remains at the base.
This helps prevent the vessel from overheating and protects the surface beneath. Overheated glass may crack.
If the Flame Becomes Too Strong
If the flame flickers excessively or becomes too large, extinguish the candle and allow it to cool completely.
Trim the wick before relighting to restore a gentle, even burn.
Extinguish with Intention
Using a candle snuffer is an elegant way to extinguish your candle. It helps minimise smoke and keeps the wick properly centred for the next burn.
Care Between Burns
Once extinguished, gently re-centre the wick if needed using a centring tool.
Keep your candle covered when not in use to protect it from dust and preserve its fragrance. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain its quality over time.
A Final Note
Candles are designed to bring calm, warmth, and a sense of stillness into your space.
With just a little care, they will reward you with a beautiful, even burn from beginning to end.
