Why Does My Candle Tunnel? How to Prevent and Fix Candle Tunnelling
You light your candle, enjoy it for an hour or two, and then notice a ring of wax left around the edge of the jar. After a few burns, the flame seems to sink deeper and deeper into the candle, leaving large amounts of unused wax behind.
This is known as candle tunnelling, and it’s one of the most common candle-care issues.
The good news? It’s usually easy to prevent and, in many cases, simple to fix.
What Is Candle Tunnelling?
Candle tunnelling occurs when a candle burns down through the centre while leaving unmelted wax around the sides of the container.
As the tunnel becomes deeper, less wax melts during each burn. This can reduce fragrance throw, leave a significant amount of wax unused, and in some cases cause the candle to keep extinguishing itself—an utterly frustrating experience when you’re trying to relax and enjoy it.
Why Do Candles Tunnel?
In most cases, tunnelling happens because the candle wasn’t burned long enough during its first few uses.
The first burn helps establish your candle’s future burn pattern. If the wax melts only around the wick and not across most of the surface, the candle is more likely to continue burning within that smaller melt pool.
Over time, this creates the tunnel effect many candle lovers are familiar with.
Other factors that may contribute to tunnelling include:
- Burning a candle for short periods
- Drafts from windows, fans, or air vents
- An untrimmed wick
- A wick that is not centred
- Cooler room temperatures
- A poorly made candle with an incorrectly sized wick
Why the First Burn Matters
Think of the first burn as laying the foundation for every burn that follows.
When you allow the wax to melt evenly across the surface, you give the candle the best chance of burning evenly throughout its life.
For most candles, we recommend allowing enough time for the melt pool to reach, or come close to reaching, the edge of the container during the first burn. Some candles will naturally catch up as they burn lower in the container, as the flame often generates more heat deeper into the jar.
The real issue occurs when a candle is repeatedly burned for short periods, creating only a small circle of melted wax around the wick.
Depending on the size of the candle, achieving a full melt pool can take up to four hours.
How to Prevent Candle Tunnelling
Allow a Full Melt Pool
Whenever possible, allow the melted wax to reach close to the edge of the container before extinguishing your candle.
This is especially important during the first two to three burns. While many people say the first burn is the most important, we believe the first few burns play an equally important role in establishing an even burn pattern.
Trim Your Wick
Before each burn, trim your wick to approximately 5mm and ensure it is centred and upright.
A properly maintained wick creates a cleaner flame and helps encourage an even burn.
Avoid Drafts
Burn your candle away from open windows, fans, and strong air currents.
Drafts can cause uneven burning and affect the size of the melt pool.
Give Your Candle Time
Candles are designed to be enjoyed slowly. Very short burn sessions can make it difficult for the wax to melt evenly across the surface.
How to Fix a Tunnelled Candle
If your candle has already started tunnelling, don’t worry; it can often be rescued.
First, try a longer burn if the candle is still near the top of the container. In some cases, the candle may naturally catch up and create a wider melt pool.
If that doesn’t work, try the foil technique:
- Light your candle.
- Wrap a collar of aluminium foil around the top of the container.
- Allow the candle to burn for 1–2 hours.
The foil helps trap heat, encouraging the wax around the edges to melt and level out the surface.
Depending on the severity of the tunnelling, you may need to repeat the process.
If the candle still doesn’t recover, allow it to cool completely and carefully remove some of the excess wax from around the edges. The removed wax can be used in a wax melter, so it doesn’t go to waste.
Enjoy Every Last Burn
A well-cared-for candle will burn more evenly, release fragrance more effectively, and help you get the most from every jar.
At Embers & Roots, we believe in creating premium-quality candles that are a pleasure to enjoy from the moment they arrive to the very last burn. Taking a moment to light your candle, settle into your favourite chair, and slow down for a while is one of life’s tiny joys.
With a little candle care, you’ll be able to enjoy those moments for even longer.
