Are Fragrance Oils Safe?

Jun 18, 2026 | blog

Everything you need to know, explained simply.

There’s something instinctive about wanting to know what fills the air in your home.

A candle feels small, gentle even. But when it’s lit, it becomes part of your space, your routine, and your everyday moments.

So it’s only natural to ask:

Are fragrance oils safe?

The short answer is yes; when they are carefully formulated, properly tested, and used as intended.

Like most things, though, there’s a little more to understand beneath the surface.

What are fragrance oils?

Fragrance oils are blends of aromatic ingredients designed to create a specific scent experience.

They can contain:

  • Naturally derived ingredients, including components isolated from essential oils
  • Safe synthetic ingredients that help improve stability, consistency, and performance

This balance allows a fragrance to remain reliable, long-lasting, and beautifully layered.

In candle making, fragrance oils are specifically developed to perform safely when heated, which is very different from how perfumes or raw essential oils behave.

Why not just use essential oils?

It’s a common question.

While essential oils are natural, they aren’t always the best – or safest – option for candles.

Many essential oils:

  • Don’t perform well when burned
  • Lose their scent quickly
  • Struggle to fill a room with fragrance
  • Can become unstable at higher temperatures
  • Are not specifically designed or tested for combustion in the way candle fragrance oils are

Fragrance oils, by contrast, are created for this exact purpose: to remain stable, safe, consistent, and effective when used in candles.

How safety is ensured

In the UK and across Europe, fragrance oils used in candles are subject to regulations and industry standards designed to promote safe use.

Reputable candle makers, including ourselves, follow guidance from organisations such as:

  • IFRA (International Fragrance Association)
  • CLP Regulations (Classification, Labelling and Packaging)

This means:

  • Every fragrance has a maximum recommended usage level
  • Ingredients are assessed and reviewed for safety
  • Products are labelled appropriately where required

When used within these guidelines, fragrance oils are considered suitable for normal home use.

What about toxins or “clean burning”?

You may have seen concerns online about candles releasing harmful substances.

The reality is that a well-made candle – using quality wax, an appropriate wick, and correctly dosed fragrance oil – should burn cleanly when used as directed.

The amount of fragrance released into the air is relatively small, and overall performance depends far more on how a candle is formulated and burned than on fragrance oils alone.

Just because something is natural does not mean it is inherently safe.

Some essential oils can have significant physiological effects on the body and may not be suitable for everyone, including pregnant women, young children, or those with certain health conditions.

This is why safety should always be judged by evidence, testing, and appropriate use; rather than whether an ingredient is natural or synthetic.

Sensitivity and personal preference

Scent is deeply personal.

While fragrance oils are assessed for safety, some individuals may still be sensitive to certain ingredients, just as they might be with perfumes, skincare products, or household cleaners.

If you know you’re sensitive to fragrances, consider:

  • Burning candles in a well-ventilated space
  • Choosing lighter, more subtle scent profiles
  • Discontinuing use if irritation occurs

Our approach at Embers & Roots

We believe that what you bring into your home should feel both beautiful and considered.

Every fragrance we use is:

  • Carefully selected for both scent and safety
  • Used within recommended industry guidelines
  • Thoroughly tested to ensure a clean, even burn

We don’t chase overpowering fragrances.

Instead, we create scents that capture moments, seasons, and places in a way that feels authentic and natural within the home.

A balanced perspective

Fragrance oils aren’t something to fear, but they are something worth understanding.

When thoughtfully formulated and responsibly used, they allow us to create candles that:

  • Smell beautiful
  • Perform consistently
  • Can be enjoyed confidently as part of everyday life

Because a candle should do one simple thing well:

Create atmosphere, without compromise.
