Following on from our post on fragrance notes, there are four main fragrance families that every fragrance falls into.
While these can be broken down further into subcategories, we prefer to keep things simple.
Understanding these four families offers an intuitive way to explore scent and to recognise what you’re naturally drawn to.
These are known as the four fragrance families.
Scent is often felt before it is understood.
🌸 Floral
Soft, delicate & quietly familiar
Floral fragrances are perhaps the most recognisable.
They echo the natural beauty of petals and blossoms, sometimes light and airy, sometimes rich and full.
You may notice notes such as neroli, jasmine, rose or lavender.
These scents bring a gentle softness to a space, a calm, comforting presence that feels both timeless and familiar.
🌿 Fresh
Clean, bright & uplifting
Fresh fragrances feel like a breath of air through an open window.
They are light, energising, and quietly revitalising, often carrying notes of citrus, herbs, or green leaves.
Think lemon, thyme, basil or eucalyptus.
These scents are perfect for moments of clarity, for mornings, kitchens, and spaces where you want to feel refreshed and reset.
🌲 Woody
Grounded, earthy & still
Woody fragrances are rooted in nature.
They carry the depth of forests, the warmth of timber, and the quiet calm of the outdoors.
Notes often include cedarwood, sandalwood, pine or moss.
These scents create a sense of stillness, ideal for evenings, slower moments, and spaces where you want to feel settled.
🍂 Warm & Amber
Rich, comforting & softly enveloping
Sometimes called amber or oriental, this family is all about warmth.
These fragrances wrap a space in softness, often with notes of spice, resin, or gentle sweetness.
You may notice vanilla, cinnamon, clove or amber.
They feel cosy and familiar, like candlelight on a darker evening, a quiet invitation to slow down.
Finding what feels like home
You don’t need to analyse every note to choose the right fragrance.
Often, the ones you’re drawn to already reflect what you need.
- If you crave lightness → you may lean towards fresh
- If you want softness → floral may feel right
- If you seek calm → woody brings grounding
- If you need comfort → warm & amber will cocoon your space
Your home can shift with you – through seasons, moods, and moments.
